In 1877, after a tragic marriage with Antonina Milyukova and unsuccessful attempts to reconcile himself with the present state of things, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky left his wife in the care of her sister and went on a trip to Europe, which was arranged for him by N.G. Rubinstein and his younger brother Anatoly, and sponsored later by Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck, to whom he dedicated the Fourth Symphony written at the time.
We found in the Tchaikovsky's letters the names of hotels, villas and pensions, where he stayed. Most of these buildings was not preserved or changed names. However, after studying on the Internet the texts of the old tourist guides of that time, we could find out all their addresses and coordinates. All these points of accommodation were put on a map (Google Maps), and for many, the web pages of the premises that are currently located there have been added. Letters of Tchaikovsky to N.F. von Meck, to his brothers, to N. Rubinstein, and to others were sorted by city names and excerpts from them were placed on the corresponding pages.
With this interactive application, you can repeat Tchaikovsky's journey through the cities of Europe and even walk with him on the nearest streets using panoramic photos from the Street View.
